New Site Design: Up Vote or Down Vote ?

Hi - For me I really like the new features, just great.

The new colour scheme is in my opinion horrible. Not so much the turquois, but the stark white back ground. Particularly nasty is is the black screen shots serving as the lesson icons. The old colour scheme was sophisticated and soothing on the eye.

But - great new features !

Colours aside (design is such a subjective thing) the site works much better on tablets and phones. Good work Jeffrey :-)

I disagree, the sub navigation is not responsive for phones (At least on my Nexus 5). This is a minor detail.

Also, the video is unable to go fullscreen using Chrome Browser on Android Lollipop (Still on my Nexus 5). iPhone forced it fullscreen once the video was loaded, it's a bit meh when I feel like watching some videos on the go. But other than that the overall site is only improving, I like it :)

I could be wrong here but it looks to me like its supposed to meld a bit more with forge.

I dont like the colors but it's very well done with new features (just a search in forum would be perfect).

Well the "S" key search functionality seems to not work any more.. Not a big fan of the new menu layout as I think it makes it a bit more clicks for the same. Still think laracast.com/all should be in the menu as well

Overall a horrible experience on the iphone 5 compared to what it was before. Also this textarea is somewhat buggy on my phone :-/

bashy's avatar

Not that bad at all on iPhone 6 Plus, what areas are "terrible"?

Vince - I appreciate you creating a thread to describe what you think is horrible and nasty. A lot of work into this.

  • Forum search is back.
  • All mobile fixes/optimizations will be done this week.

I think it's horrible that we're not giving @JeffreyWay some leeway. Things are never done. It takes time. He's only one person. If one finds bugs report them, otherwise I think unsolicited criticism is so unnecessary.

I like blue. You like black. Jeff likes green. That gal over there likes purple with some pink. And @bashy likes washed out, yellow Instagram filters. So what are we talking about here... can you access the content and learn?

I like it... It's soothing and simple. What I'm more concerned with is @JeffreyWay 's 111 awards, I feel like he's cheating and up-ing his numbers.

@jeff_way

Heah, Jeff, It's not my desire to kick the site, but rather to solicit opinion. You have done enormous amounts of work and that it clear and obvious.

I will have to disagree with one or two other posters who argue that colour schemes are just a subjective and personal issue. They are not. Design layout, fonts and in particular colour schemes communicate to your target customer at a deep subliminal level. You only have 1-2 seconds to get past threshold appeal in new customers. In existing customers layouts and colour schemes reaffirm the positive subliminal messages. Adverse design schemes work against the purpose of a site.

As always, you have done an outstanding piece of work, that is clear. However the design scheme might need some adjustment.

dberry's avatar

@vincej, here's the irony in your "deep subliminal level" statement above.

Blues in general are peaceful and relaxing, but the the teal/turquoise color used psychologically invokes communication, self awareness, initiative and creative expression, it makes you feel happy and relaxed.

The orange that was on here was a great color also, as orange is also a color of creativity, ambition and drive that stimulates creative thinking.

Me personally, although you don't feel that it is subjective, I feel like the same essence of creativity captured with the new colors used, but it's a whole lot easier on the eyes.

So for a site that is all about communication, creativity, taking the initiative to learn something new and better yourself, become self-aware of your own capabilities and to be creative and develop beyond what you thought you could, I'd say he pretty much nailed the "deep subliminal level"

Just my two cents, which aren't worth much.

i really don't like the new color its kind of ugly in my opinion. loved the orange one much more

Guys you can't be serious. Maybe the reason for colour selection was to somewhat match the styling of Forge, maybe Jeffrey just likes it. I've seen only a couple of issues pointed out by a few guys with sight limitations and in my opinion those are the issues that are worth solving.

@vincej regarding those 'nasty' video thumbnails. I absolutely love them. They look very TRONish and provide nice contrast with light colours elsewhere. This webpage still manages to look very elegant given the amount of contents and all those features we have here.

@JeffreyWay I think it's great, really nice font looks ace on iPhone and macbook love the color scheme, nice work!

Just one thing I have mentioned before a few times, have a search box on mobile make it easier to search around. Other than that 10 out of 10

I like the new structure. Infact I was always on the fence and the new design was the gust that blew me over. For anyone stuck on the colors, maybe use your CSS skills with a extension like StyleBot which allows you to add your styles and personal preferences to a specific webpage.

I like, much more professional and much more readable. Good job!

Apologies to all concerned. I should never have used the words "horrible" and "nasty".

Within my culture, that being British, amongst friends we feel free to use all kinds of seemingly bad words, but they do not have the same sharp edge as North Americans might perceive them. If anyone has ever watched the "Ozborns" where Ozzy is talking about his lovely family you might see it illustrated ...

Anyway, I forgot where I was, I will temper my use of language.

The design is growing on me. :o)

Cheers !

alenabdula's avatar

but they do not have the same sharp edge as North Americans

I don't think it's a American thing necessarily. There's no tonality, we're sitting behind computer screen, people can easy misinterpret what they're reading as personal attack.

I think its more cluttered now, navigation is split in different places.

It used to be spot on and very clean design but now its simply things all over the place.

If think you need to master the "less is more" principle a bit more Jeffrey :)

A lot of things have moved for the sake of doing them differently?

If you take the top menu for example the previous one was spot on! now there are 2 menus there which is confusing. you would thing that the 2nd lower menu is for the forum alone but its for 3-4 different things.

Shovels's avatar

I have to say, with all due respect, that some of the comments in this thread are borderline rude.

If you went to someone's home and they'd recently decorated, spending possibly hundreds of hours on it, I don't think you would walk around poking holes in their workmanship, constructive or not.

It's odd how some lose etiquette just because they're sat behind a computer screen.

Just sayin' :)

Its plain wrong to see something wrong in a friends house and not politely let them know about it!

Anyhow i think the navigation has been split in too different places! You can simply kill the secondary navigation to keep it clean!

vs

"Learn" could be a drop down menu with ( Lessons, Site Index, Whats New, Series, Collections, Check List, Watch Later, Favorites ) (now these are in 3 different places!!!)

JeffreyWay's avatar

Folks - with respect, if you think the old design was much better, you're crazy. :) Particularly the forum is massive, massive improvement over its former self.

@unitedworx - I don't like grouping those navigation sections. Too many choices at that point.

Forum area is lovely but the menu does seem a little confusing.

Maybe some breadcrumbs for forum posts as well?

Or the category name of the thread somewhere by the post. :)

Oh and pagination at the top as well! So much scrolling :p

fraserk's avatar

I could careless about the site design and colors. I came here just for the great videos.

We haven't yet redesigned the conversation page. That's why it's mostly the same as it was before.
