Just seen the new design, not a fan of having to click more from the homepage to find what i want, can you bring back some kind of menu on the homepage please!

Video time lengths are being cut to 3 digits. Videos over 10 minutes long are showing the correct time, i.e. a video of 12:35 length shows up at 2:35 length.

Okay, so I've made a number of tweaks, based upon the feedback.

  1. More contrast
  2. Navigation bar is on the main home page.
  3. Moved the breadcrumbs below the banner.
  4. @bwrice - fixed the time glitch.

Thanks!

I like the new design. Very glad that forum post likes are now visible on mobile and that I can edit my posts from mobile.

A few things I noticed:

  • The pagination buttons are way too big on mobile.
  • On mobile, the page headings are not centered.
  • There doeant seem to be a way to close the mobile menu once its open.

The contrast on the forums is nice but in general I like the new design. Hell I liked the previous one...

If it doesn't get in the way of watching videos or posting on the forum (and doesn't make me squint) it's going to be fine.

The smaller header is much better :)

It's still huge on the forum front pages though. Moving the New Conversation button to the sidebar would reclaim some space, that could even be used to extend the breadcrumb element to all pages:

Maybe the "XX conversations and counting" text could even move to the breadcrumb?

Is it possible to get the old style? And use it on own projects? =)

You can do it yourself and change anything you want really through http://userstyles.org and the stylish browser extension. It was done before in the bright green phase of laracasts. So, if you don't like something, and want it modified for your personal use. Feel free to update your own viewing experience.

Congrats for the new design, I really like it. Also, thanks to the OP, nice thread.

@JeffreyWay Idk, but have you considered how changing the color scheme with every new redesign affects the brand identity of laracasts? Or maybe that doesn't matter to you. For example, laravel has a consistent orange color for its branding. I think on the business side of things, it might be good a pick one color palette and stick with it, even when you redesign the layout. Just my two cents :)

With the new design the alarm / bell icon flashes on my avatar on the top right on each page load - just briefly. (Windows Chrome 49.02)

Search bar is much better that the previous icon.

The typography works better in this design. With the last the font would initially show as serif and then change to san-serif after a fraction of a second. Now it loads correctly immediately.

I personally would like a slightly larger font, but that's mostly because I'm old!

@JeffreyWay - not sure if you saw my post in site feedback a while back, but seeing as you're on a design tip at the moment, what do you think of the idea for a different tab icon for discussions vs casts?

That way its easier to see if you're discussing or watching in multiple Laracasts tabs :)

I'm one of those who prefer the old design, and it was more colorful. This new design needs some time to get use to. Personal taste on the color, so just do whatever you feel is the best. I'll get use to it eventually.

@costeeta suggested of consistent brand color. I would definitely agree with that.

I had to use google search to find how to search laracast last time. Now, it is very obvious. Nicely done. I also like the new menu.

@JeffreyWay, can you reduce the margin-bottom/line-height for the paragraphs (p) and list items (li) ??

It's too damn high

ARCANEDEV's avatar

OK, how about the list items (li)??

Example:

Note : I'm using a laptop (1366x768) and i'm afraid of hurting myself while scrolling ( °_°)

@JeffreyWay Thank you, the font size is good and the text clearer. I'm on a 1366x768 laptop, and use a second screen of 1920 x 1080, both look good. Thank you.

davestewart's avatar

@ARCANEDEV you can use stylish as per this thread to reduce those bottom margins.

Now you come to mention it, I think the line height could do with some shrinkage; 2em is huge! 1.4em is the usual for a document, though 1.5 feels comfortable here :)

Life on Laracasts

  1. @JeffreyWay improves design
  2. People complain about the "old colors being better"
  3. Some people actually have some minor bugs
  4. Jeffrey fixes minor bugs
  5. Repeat in a few months.

@prez Well, you could also try to sound a little more constructive in your feedback. As you can see in this thread, being constructive and proposing possible solutions to actual problems you find, works way better then just saying "I don't want to scroll to see a menu and I don't like it". We all know how hard it is to maintain websites and to make them look good in every browser. So it's only fair to point out css-bugs and stuff like that.

In short: pointing out bugs is nog "complaining" but "Colors are kind of dull" is.

.....but the Fight Club reference was pretty funny, if I do say so myself. 50 gold stars, no demerits

A little perspective: For the most part, all of the feedback, regardless of its quality or level of tact is coming from people who care about the site and the Laracasts community. So there's that. Even more perspective: color schemes and line spacing and who's being growly or less than constructive; first world problems.

And the award for least constructive post goes to . . . me. Winning!

-Happy coding

I love design feedback, just as long as it's constructive. It's hard to read "I really don't like this", when I just spent two long weeks working on it.

But I think the design is much better now, thanks to some of the feedback and ideas. I'll keep working on it this week, making little tweaks.

@arcanedev - Line-height and list-item margins are a little bit smaller now.
