Although the new design give me some unconvenience... But I applaud Jeffrey's choice!

You can go to dashboard or profile to gain access to the menu which is one extra click from the previous 2 designs. Maybe that's intended?

I like this new design, it's a nice refreshment overall :)

Colors are kind of dull

Yeah, I love the previous ones...

When you're watching a video, the headline looks like the text has been selected.. I keep wanting to click on the page to remove the selection :)

I really don't like this design

I really love seeing these threads, each time the design changes a bit. My favorites are always:

  • "Bring back the old design!" - Sure, I'll delete two weeks worth of work. No problem.
  • "I liked the old colors." Really, because you hated them before.
  • "I hate this." Thanks.

:)

Looks fresh! I like it so far. I'm missing the point counter in the top right corner, but as they don't really signify much, eh not a big deal.

Well, I like it :-) It's especially nice to see the search being more prominent :-)

I'm not against adding a touch more contrast.

What do you all think? Darken the background, like @prez said? Or keep it white.

(Update: more contrast has been added.)

Beyond the design, a few things worth noting:

  • View your completion stats from your main dashboard.
  • You'll find a link to your own forum questions in your username dropdown in the nav bar.
  • The main forum page now has a dedicated search form.
  • Yada yada, some other things too.

Hi Jeffrey,

Congrats on rolling out a new design.

What's the rationale behind such a large header?

On my 1920 x 1080 screen, including the browser chrome, the content doesn't start until halfway down the physical screen.

I see the rationale behind making the search box more obvious - the first time I tried to find search on the old site, it took me about a minute to find the tiny magnifying glass. I don't feel it has to be there all the time though. Could it not just be the first tab?

And I'm really not feeling the Uber-banner with all the white-space around it. I've looked through a few other sections, and I can see that the page scrolls to mitigate that when you click filters and so on (nice job, by the way) but it feels like although it might work for some sections, it's not really that great for most. In my opinion, it doesn't feel like a step forwards.

I hope that's constructive.

@JeffreyWay Would love a slightly darker background as @Prez said.

When I first landed on the home page, I really thought there was a search auto drop-down like Laravel documentation. Things would have been much easier to navigate through.

I'm a fan of this design. We've come a long way from the great purple crisis of late 2015.

@davestewart -

What's the rationale behind such a large header?

Pretty common these days. A lot of sites do it.

I see the rationale behind making the search box more obvious - the first time I tried to find search on the old site, it took me about a minute to find the tiny magnifying glass. I don't feel it has to be there all the time though. Could it not just be the first tab?

One of the biggest complaints was that it was difficult to find the search. It's not difficult anymore, and total 'page views' will 100% go up.

And I'm really not feeling the Uber-banner with all the white-space around it.

Not sure what you mean by "uber-banner." It's the same width as it was before.

@JillzTom - That's the next step. Just haven't implemented that part yet.

@JeffreyWay, Are there any plans to add reply button ? :) I'm using a bookmark link to add these

javascript:function replymsg(t){$("[name=body]").val("@"+t+", ").focus()}$(".like-reply-form").each(function(){var t=$(this).parents().eq(1).find("h5 a[href]").first().text();$(this).append('<button type="button" class="edit-reply-button Button--Naked" onclick="replymsg(\''+t+'\');"><i class="material-icons">reply</i></button>')});

@JeffreyWay

I fear change, change is bad! And I always claim to not be any kind of web designer, but here's my 2p worth:

A couple of points others have made :

more contrast

less header. Just because others do isnt a great reason to waste screen real estate (especially in forum area these two)

and probably bigger text too in forum too.

The full height front page header hides all those lovely graphics, If they were mine I'd want to show them off on load, not hide them below the fold.

But if you like it - I can live with it.

Mostly... I lived in hope you might fix this bug with the new iteration but alas not yet:

https://laracasts.com/discuss/channels/site-improvements/issue-with-pagination/replies/140395

...man it winds my ocd up - every time I see a thread with *15 posts i just have to click the "Updated" link :-)

kind regards

l.

Loved the new interface, congratulations @JeffreyWay.

Do you have any thoughts about accessibility? You know, adding some "role" tags, not removing the outline style…

Gerard's avatar

@JeffreyWay I prefer a darker background color too. #eee could be ok.

Thanks for your efforts Jeffrey. Some things may seem strange for us now, but in a few days we will surely love it :)

PD: If finally you change the background color, you should take a look at pagination buttons, they have a white right border, and the unselected ones will need some more contrast or make them the same color as the background.

Did you just comment, "A lot of sites are doing it these days"?

Lol, sorry that cracked me up, since when do we follow the sheep? Make it your own and dominate it!!!!

I love the new Layout.

But of course - Every time you get a Re-Design ( no matter if its laracasts or not ) someone says: "Bähhhh - The old one looked better". It takes a few days until you accustom the new layout.

I have only two little improvements:

  • There should be a Button or something for the forum, so you dont have to make three steps until you get there
  • I Love the focused Search on the Frontpage. But i think a "Suggestion List" like from the laravel docs with Algolia or something like that would be even better to get instant search results & suggestions. Maybe with a little Button "or search through categories" also.

Otherwise really cool improvements. Love the Stats :)

Because the color: For me its a bit to boring/dark. But with colors the opinions vary. I think a bit more colors in the head would be cool.

People don't like new designs / layouts? Build a feature where the users will be able to select one of their own or many Wordpress themes and just by click of a button, the website will transform with their favorite colors and layout!

Unfortunately still losing the discussions filters box on smaller screens. This was and is the only way to get to 'my participation' (check if any threads I participated in have been resolved or updated) and favourite discussions.
