Announcement: Laracasts XP Updates

Hey, everybody! This thread is for those of you who are incredibly active on the forum and care about the leaderboard + XP. If that’s not you…nothing to see here.

Still here? Cool. Okay, so, this is overdue, but we’re tweaking Laracasts experience points in a number of ways. These changes will be rolled out in three phases:

  1. Refresh leaderboard design. Increase max XP level to 200, and recalculate current level + “best reply” awards. [COMPLETE]
  2. Update leaderboard to include both All Time and Short-Term leaders, separated by tabs.
  3. Finally roll out physical awards and perks, including free lifetime accounts, mugs, shirts, and hand-written cards from the Laracasts team.

The plan is to have all three phases complete within the next two months. Phase 1 is finished, so let’s talk about it.

Refreshed Leaderboard Page

This was completed a month ago or so. It’s fairly simple, but a nicer presentation than what we originally offered. Each group is now separated into Hall of Fame, Elites, Pillars, and Honorables. Have a look here: https://laracasts.com/discuss/leaderboard

Max Level Increase

When I originally implemented experience points on the site, I didn’t realize that it would become so popular. I just thought it was a fun little way to measure your participation on the site. The original cap was level 50, assuming 5000xp per level. However, many of you have long since reached level 50 …with nowhere to go.

I’ve now bumped the max level to 200, BUT…after level 50, each level is significantly longer (50,000xp).

Recalculate Current Level

As part of the max level increase, I recalculated your current level. It wouldn’t be fair, otherwise. And it only helps you. Your level is now likely higher than 50. For example, the current long-time leader, @snapey is now at level 113.

Recalculate Best Reply Awards

Behind the scenes, I performed quite a bit of work restructuring how we track and calculate XP. As part of this restructuring, I recalculated your “Best Reply” award count. Now, you may find that this new number is lower than what it previously was. My apologies, but, if this is the case for you, it’s because a thread that originally gave you that award has since been deleted.

I recalculated this number by fetching the count of all threads where each of you were marked as the best response.

Okay, that’s it for now! I’ll update this very thread when phase two is complete.

Will @LaryAI get a physical gift? :D

I think Lary should be removed from the leadboard. Let's keep if for humans.

I'm still confused how can @fylzero have so much experience?

He has 1,089,660 xp with only 209 best replies, 3023 lessons completed and 1534 forum replies.

Due to the fact that the old earned xp are not converted to new values, we can calculate with:

  • 500pts - best reply award
  • 100pts - complete a lesson
  • 10pts - reply to a thread

So in his case (209 x 500) + (3023 x 100) + (1534 x 10) = 104 500 + 302 300 + 15 340 = 422 140 xp.

667 520 xp is too much of a difference.

@MichalOravec agreed, I have less xp and a higher level according to the leaderboard, and slmost double the best replies.

@MichalOravec I think that the values for the best reply and reply to a thread changed, I think that's why @jeffreyway had to recalculate the level, this seems to be the new values, this shows when you hover on your total experience on your profile page

new points

And when you complete a series you are also awarded 1000xp.

@Beiri I know that.

If the new values were used, he would have 664 700 xp and not 1 089 660 xp.

With new values people from top 10:

Snapey would have at least 8 475 500 xp
Sinnbeck -> 6 838 200 xp
tykus has private profile
bobbybouwmann -> 4 494 900 xp
MichalOravec (me) -> 3 122 200 xp
martinbean -> 3 009 100 xp
Nakov -> 2 644 200 xp
jlrdw -> 3 414 500 xp (would be in 5th place instead of me)
tisuchi -> 1710 900 xp
Cronix has private profile

A few people outside of top 10:

bashy would have at least 1 319 900 xp
Tray2 -> 2 000 200 xp
Sergiu17 -> 1 203 700 xp
bugsysha -> 1 339 100 xp
rodrigo.pedra -> 1 040 400 xp
vincent15000 ->  1 064 800 xp
automica -> 905 500 xp

It can be seen that the biggest difference is the change in the number of xp when answering the thread: 10 xp -> 100 xp
