Apps/tools

Hello Everybody

I was wondering what kind of apps and or tools you use in your daily workflow?

For example, I use:

  • phpstorm (big projects)
  • sublime text (quick edits)
  • sequel pro (database management)
  • git (version control)
  • bower (dependency management)
  • gulp (task runner)

What about you?

@malfait.robin yes it is :) and it's great! i've recently moved over to windows i just wish i had a terminal now :( if anyone knows of a terminal emulator or something like that for windows please let me know.

toniperic's avatar

@malfait.robin yes, it's the best one I've found. It has everything you need and it's really light and easy to use. Wish I had terminal on Windows, that's really a big drawback.

@toniperic yeah, i'm a Linux fanatic and the switch to Windows is quite a pain to be honest. linux = terminals galore... Windows = cmd oh my!!... i really need to invest in a mac.

@malfait.robin thanks i will check it out

@5pArxz I've recently made the migration to mac; however, take a look at Cmder (http://bliker.github.io/cmder/) for windows.

One tiny little thing I absolutely cannot live without is Spark. It is the first thing I download when I am setting up a Mac.

For example:

I use it to quickly open up Applications.

opt + s opens up Safari

opt + . opens up Terminal

opt + v opens up VLC etc

I will add a few:

  • MongoHub (MongoDB management)
  • SourceTree (I don't use Github for corporate projects, I use BitBucket, so this works perfect)
  • Transit / CyberDuck 2 (FTP client, I have both, one is faster, the other offers certain added features, similar to the PHPStorm / Sublime thing, features Vs speed)
  • Canva / Illustrator / Photoshop graphic support)
  • Macaw for designs from scratch

@alfonsan how do you find macaw now? I installed the beta but didn't like it an awful lot, I know it's been updated a lot though

Ahh - Spark is pretty useful! Took me a few minutes to get it to work, but now I have hotkeys for iTerm, PHPStorm, and Chrome. Nice!

@5pArxz take a look at cygwin for windows. I find it more intuitive than cmder, etc. It is really linux like environment for windows:)

Just changed over to mac from linux, so I can't really add anything that hasn't already been added. I'm loving reading what everyone is using, and have already come across people using useful apps I've yet to hear of. So thanks!

I am curious...are any mac users using a tiling windows manager on their mac? It may not even be possible. I've heard of moom and and currently using Better Touch Tool but in linux I was using a tiling windows manager called i3wm, and have never been more productive more quickly

For those looking for a windows terminal check out ConEmu by a dude by the name of Maximus5.

Will solve most of your terminal issues.

Creator/Developer is also very active on StackOverflow etc and so is accessible for help if your having any issues or complicated setups.

Can even do the iterm tilde "trick" although I found binding it to CTRL+~ caused less hassles.

@bagwaa Better but still not that great. They need to finish deep integration with self provided css/js/fonts libraries

For using the command line on Windows, I installed Git for Windows, which includes Git Bash. This is by far the best command line tool I have used!

I "host" Git Bash in ConEmu (the program that Cmder is also using), just to tune it a bit :)
