Request to Restore Light Theme Option on Laracasts Forum

Hi @jeffreyway,

I’ve been a happy user of this platform almost since its inception and have greatly enjoyed the experience.

I recall that you’ve asked for user feedback several times regarding the option to keep both light and dark themes. Whenever possible, I’ve expressed my preference for retaining the light theme, as I find the dark theme uncomfortable for my eyes. Even while coding, I always opt for a light theme. I know that some other regular users have also shared similar concerns about keeping the light theme available.

Unfortunately, today I noticed that the interface is entirely in dark mode, and I couldn’t find a way to select my preferred light theme in the profile settings. It seems that the option for the light theme might have been removed from the Laracasts discussion forum.

While I’m not sure about others, I personally find it difficult to use the forum in its current state, as the dark theme strains my eyes. Even writing this message has been challenging.

Am I missing the option to switch to the light theme? If it has been removed, would you please consider re-implementing it?

Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

I have removed the light theme entirely. However, we reduced the intensity of the dark theme substantially. You'll notice that we're now using a slate color rather than the deep dark blue, which created too much eye strain.

I understand that many people prefer a light theme, but we're a small business and it's a lot of work and effort to maintain two themes (despite what people say).

Possibly, we can commission someone to make a browser extension that returns the light theme for the forum. I'm not against that. But I don't want to maintain it myself.

@jeffreyway Thanks for your clear statement.

I understand you. But honestly, it is tough for me to read still.

That would be a great initiative indeed. Supporting fully 👍

It's just a reference for others struggling like me.

However, for the time being, I am using this Dark Mode Toggle Google Chrome plugin which at least helps me out. Of course, it's not a great fit, but a workaround.

As a workaround for anyone using Firefox, the "Dark Background and Light Text" worked better for me.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/dark-background-light-text/

Despite the extension's name, it lets you choose any color for the background and text on its general preferences.

This extension also has the "Recommended" badge, which upon hover states: "Firefox only recommends add-ons that meet our standards for security and performance."

After install, head to its general preferences, set the "Default method of changing page colors" preference to "disabled". Otherwise, it will trigger dark mode on every site, which for enjoyers of light themes is not the desired outcome.

Then, in Laracasts, or any dark theme-only site, choose the "Invert" option from the extension's menu. It will remember those settings.

If you don't like the inverted colors, the extension's general preferences lets you choose any colors for the background and text colors. After choosing your preferred ones, then choose one of the "Simple CSS" or the "Stylesheet processor" option from the extension's menu on the site you want to use light colors.

@rodrigo.pedra Thanks for this addon, although I don't use Firefox!

But still, it will be helpful to others who are looking for the option in Firefox.

This change saddens me. I’ve been kept busy by other things the past couple of months, so I haven’t been here very much, but with this change I don’t think I can continue visiting at all, which makes me sad, ’cause it’s an amazing resource. Even just performing a search, finding this thread and reading it has made my vision blurry and given me the beginnings of a headache, and I had to move to another app to write this reply.

If a plugin or extension ends up being developed (preferably for Safari for my part), I would be happy enough to use that, but as it stands, the site is sadly not usable to me. :-(

I would like to have light theme of the website also. Somehow my eyes are better with light themes. I would really appreciate the light theme version of this website.

Light theme option is truly needed. For me, dark theme is completely unusable. I noticed that the aesthetics of this site change every 6 months (pixelated font for instance, which for me personally is total disaster to read), but still no resources to develop a light theme?

I want to buy lifetime subscription and during last 1.5 year I regularly come to check if there is light theme option become available.

Been a "dark theme guy" for what seems like ever, but recently found that light themes are sharper for these old eyes now... although the dark theme here was far from a deal breaker for me (far less than the old pixelised code blocks)... this light theme is both a welcome addition, and looks to be really good on the eyes too.

Nice work Jeffrey... thank you!
