Laracasts Update Bugs

Just Figured I would get a thread started about the new bugs being introduced with the new Laracasts update.

First Off: The "Site Improvements" link in the forum returns a "whoops, something..."

I see some definite improvements here: thanks @JeffreyWay! I have to say though... think I preferred the dark theme.

Topic title on the reply view is the same as the background and therefore cannot be seen.

Whoops, posted with the intention of editing in a link to that post reply, but it seems as if the edit link is gone too now.

Anyway, page title cannot be seen on this view.

It looks nice, but on my iPhone the menu at the top (with recommended Reading) is in two lines

  • Also on the leaderboards page, my username in the top right says "KHAN" which is another user on the site. It only says that on that page, the other ones say "calebporzio"

On An iPhone the flash massage apears ontop of the greenish header in the same collor, they kind of blend toghether

Hitting the "s" key no longer pulls down the search bar. I must say, I will mourn this loss... I thought that was really innovative.

@JeffreyWay, sorry to add an other feedback item (don't misunderstand this for critique, I can assure you it is not!) Once again you take the website to a new level!

The topics that are marked as read could have a bit more contrast compared to the background, the gray on gray is a bit hard to read.

Hey, all -

A lot of these things were fixed almost immediately.

Mobile needs a little work still; will get to that this coming week.

An other 'detail', I'm not sure the horizontal category displays is the best idea. What if a new category is added, it'll go on 2 lines? Making font small to squeeze that new category in? It's nice, but not very future proof.

Also the 'bug' I posted a while ago is still present: The 'go back' link always goes back to the 'everything' tab. Even if we were in the 'routing' category before. If I click on the 'routing' category, click on a post, then click 'go back', I expect to go back to the routing category.

Also, the padding top&bottom isn't even on a post:

i was watching a video and when I moved to next video whole website was changed :D

I think little fix with player is required. When I change it from full screen to small screen or small screen to full screen it loses all loaded video and takes some time to load video again. Also starts again from few seconds back in video.

@JeffreyWay, I miss the 'your threads' option on the forum, I use this a lot to keep track of discussions I contributed to and do not want to get spammed by a lot of email ;)

Do like the new look! Agreed on "your threads", I used that a lot to check for any replies to posts when I'd not been on for a while.

  • Member profile name glitch fixed.
  • "My Threads" is now back.

Unrelated to the new changes, but related to the "My Threads" is the profile view...

I find the overflow: scroll to be rather disorienting in the profiles. Perhaps just a link to the post/topic or adding a slider or accordion would be better?

Alternatively, you could get rid of the redundant avatars, move the datetime over, and animate them... Something like this.

(Very rough/dirty example, but it illustrates the idea. :P)

I liked the old theme better, was more accessible for people with low-vision. Please keep in mind to keep things in high-contrast, some of the gray text is a little hard to read and some of the fonts got smaller. But yeah, just ranting that I feel the accessibility got hit a bit on the redesign. Been slightly more difficult to find screencasts.

For any issues with vision, I'd suggest making a style for this site using something like: https://userstyles.org

Can have a dark or what ever colours are better for you.

I love the new "collections", it may have been there before, but I hadn't noticed it until now.

Devon's avatar

Indeed, @Roni, it was there before. It's been renamed once or twice though. :P

What's the difference between Full Rankings and Forum Leaderboard? They both link to the same url which show the same thing.

Long thread titles hide behind the start a conversation button when you are in that thread.

I have some free time today, so I've been burning through some videos I wanted to catch up on for a while. I've noticed that the mark as viewed doesn't seem to be working for me directly from the video, or the collection list. Specifically the new red checkbox. I don''t just mean on the whole series but also the individual lessons from the collection.

Whenever I refresh a page it I have to manually log it again. I will also note. That the viewing history "which i love" and also never noticed before on the left pane does seem to be logging the videos.

Lastly, this is the first time in a while I've sat on the site for hours at a time, and it's getting a bit painful. I think the previous colour scheme was a bit easier on the eyes.

@bashy, I really like the userstyles.org when there might be no choice and no changes, for example wikipedia, however, this site is pretty fluid. @JeffreyWay, looking at how often you change your IDE's and the site, clearly you like keeping it fresh and designing, perhaps in settings maybe a couple of theme choices, like your red brown options, or a dark mode.

Also, I really liked the "s" key anywhere to search. I thought that was really a really innovative UI choice.

bashy's avatar

@Roni I'd be willing to try setup some userstyle styles for people to use. Obviously I or a group of people could work on them but we'd have to keep them up-to-date if Jeffrey updates a class name etc :)

Anyone interested, let me know.

@bashy, I'd help, I'm no UI guru, but giving back to the community is always nice.

Hey Jeffrey, great job on the new design!

One small issue: when you write an at (@) symbol in inline code it is interpreted as mentioning someone. For instance: "phpspec": "2.1.*@dev".

Roni's avatar

Thanks @Devon, I deleted mine. As a side note, @JeffreyWay, I deleted a post that was unintentionally duplicated and it's still on my "Recent Post Activity" I'm not sure if it's only viewable from my account. If someone else would kindly check and see if they see it too in my recent posts, it begins like this

"@JeffreyWay, I just noticed this, and it may affect other people more, as I don't "usually" comment that often, however in the profile page..."

Lastly, the updates to the posts are not showing up there either, only the original post.
