A few new things on the video page

Hey, all -

Just a quick note that I spent a bit of time on the main video page yesterday. Here is what's new:

  1. New Video Player Design: Time will tell if it's any good or not, but I tweaked the video player to use a custom theme and icon set.

  2. Keyboard Controls Are Back: Space bar to pause, right and left to advance or go back by ten seconds, up and down to change the volume, "f" to toggle full screen.

  3. Resolutions: I added a new settings button to the video player. This will allow you to toggle between the SD and HD versions of the video, should you need to to.

  4. Movie-Movie: By popular request, you can now hit a button in the sidebar to increase the width of the player, and darken the page. http://cl.ly/image/2y0S0y0y2j34

The next things on my list to tackle are:

  1. Local storage to remember your playback speed choice.
  2. Playback speed selection gets moved into the video player, itself.

Okay, that does it for now.

Awesome. I love the new player. When i close fullscreen the clip doesn't go back to the beginning of the video. Also on iOS the quality selector works. Now i can see video's in HD on my iPad again... :-)

Why there's only "Like" button for other comments, not for the original post, Jeffrey? I'm gonna be patiently waiting for the remember playback speed. Thank you for all the improvements!!!

@JeffreyWay It would be great if I can turn on movie mode for all videos - some additional settings in profile, maybe. So that I can avoid of clicking the over and over on each video :)

They keyboard shortcuts are still very inconsistent for me (in Safari on OS X Yosemite). The first time I pressed space while watching a video in full-screen, it killed full-screen mode. Then, I clicked on the video, and Space worked to play it. I pressed 'f', and it went back to full-screen, but then the only thing that would get me out of full-screen was escape.

I saw a discussion about autoplay next video in the series. That would be awesome aswell.

That could be a user setting or maybe as the playback speed. A button in the sidebar which is remembered through local storage.

What's your plan with that?

@JeffreyWay thanks for upgrades.

But it would be nicer again if you could figure out why some vids still dont work on iPad (air, ios 8.whatever) and also on my android phone (ok I know its old-ish but still!)

Activity Feed part 2 is the most recent culprit on iPad. There others but I forget which right now

tbh loads dont work on the fone, i just kinda gave up on expecting it months ago - but they should work. other stuff is OK

tnx

l.

@londoh - I'm having trouble figuring out why they don't play for some people. I have both an iPad and an iPhone, and the videos play just fine. So still researching.

Most people have told me that the new player solved a lot of the issues they had before.

Hi @JeffreyWay the new video player indeed solved various problems on iPad, thank you!

Right now I'm still having problems with https://laracasts.com/series/laravel-5-fundamentals/episodes/11 on an iPad iOS 8.2 through Chrome or Safari. Same error: "The video could not be loaded, either because..."

The rest of the series goes fine.

Hope this helps.

UPDATE:

It could be video dimensions. I've downloaded a couple of them and they normally are: 1728 × 1080px, but the one I can't see on my iPad is: 2304 × 1440px.

I'm on a 4th generation iPad with this screen resolution: 2048 x 1536. This video exceeds my screen resolution, so maybe the format is the problem.

Here you can see several tech specs from all of them. https://support.apple.com/specs/#ipad

I think you can choose a size for all videos and stick to it, or recognize the user agent and serve a video adjusted to its needs.

Again, hope this helps. Thanks again for your incredible work :)

@JeffreyWay awesome work thanks for sorting the controls, means I can keep being lazy and not reaching for the mouse :)

what about a "Play All" button for series?

erikbelusic's avatar

@JeffreyWay - not sure where to mention this - but any thought on allowing us to mark series as complete and it remembering? i know there is a check mark, but it never saves for me. id love to look at one of the collection pages, and see the series in the list checked off as complete. same thing goes for just browsing on the home page or anywhere with the thumbnails.

Jeffrey, if I may suggest, I think that the brightness on the controls of the video players is perhaps unnecessary. It divides the attention and it doesn't really serve a purpose.

Other than that I really liked the changes, I've been getting some network errors on video load but thats just once in a while and I think it happens when I leave the videos on idle.

Nice. Just a quick question, What color scheme you're using in that screenshot?

BradKriss's avatar

Is there a hotkey or planned hotkey for playback speed?

lunaticsz's avatar

Hey Jef, just a quick question. Which screencasting software do you use when recording these videos?

bobbybouwmann's avatar

@BradKriss The current supported hotkeys (that I know of are)

  • f => Fullscreen
  • arrow right => Go forward 5 seconds
  • arrow left => Go backwards 5 seconds
  • space => Play/Pause
  • 1-9 => Move to X * 10% of the video, so 6 would skip to 60% of the video
  • m => Mute/Unmute
