Intro+ to forms without (or contrasting with) Laravel Collective

I'd enjoy a lesson on forms, including using fields from related records. I get by, but I struggle with what I consider slightly complex cases. As @snapey noted a couple of years ago, one of the challenges (at least for me) is correctly setting the previous value when editing a form - particularly so for selects and multi-selects. Thanks!
