Laracasts Search

Sorry @JeffreyWay

The recent upgrade to the Laracasts Search ... isn't very user-friendly ...

In fact ... it sucks ...

No other way to describe it ... it sucks!

You need to click the search icon

then choose whether you want Lessons or Discussions

then type in your search query ...

then choose ONE of the displayed results ...

If that choice doesn't give you the answer you want ... you have to start from scratch AGAIN ... NOTHING gets remembered ...

The second search ... it doesn't feel TOO bad ... but if you end up doing 4 or 5 searches ... aaarrrrggghhhh!

Couldn't it at least remember my search query and where I searched (lessons or discussions)?

The current implimetation is a major time-suck ...

I was doing a search today ... and by the time I got to retyping everything for the 4th time ... I was so pi**ed *ff that I ended up writing this message!

Why don't you just hit "Enter" and filter your search however you want in the "Browse" page that is made specifically for what you ask ?

I guess that would be because ... I'm stupid!!!

You mean the input box that says "Whatcha looking for?" don't you?

And stupid me was using the Search Icon at the top right of the page near my profile picture.

DUH!!

I hope you can't see my red face ....

Then again would be appreciated if the search form redirected to the "Forum search" page if we hit "Enter" in the "Discussion" tab.

@ROBSTAR - @robstar Was a sarcastic reply really necessary? I had already accepted that I had made a mistake and used the wrong search box ...

@digiproduct you have a point... it sucks.

Two different searches with different response formats?

Too many 'experiments' around here for my liking. I now notice its an extra click to edit my post. Why?

But its ok. I can now 'like' my own posts

@snapey obviously Jeffrey's search isn't as powerful as a Google search.

I have found it easier just to do this in Google

site:laracasts.com your search term

@digiproduct First, thanks to you and @snapey for saying the search I built sucks. Great to hear. Second, sorry you're not a fan, but I think it's pretty easy to:

  1. Press /
  2. Type your search query. If you see a lesson below that matches what you want, press down a couple times to select it. Otherwise, press enter.
  3. Watch the content.

I now notice its an extra click to edit my post. Why?

A "..." context menu is pretty common. Twitter does it, too. Helps to clean things up.

@JLRDW - I have no idea why people keep trying to include their own search, just embed google search.

@MIDWESTDEV - I read Jefferies reply real good and was looking for my name in there I guess he had nothing against my Google search idea.

All I have to say to Jeffrey about his site design, I like the blue.

yes, thats one path.The other is;

  1. Press /
  2. Get the mouse and click Discussions
  3. Type the term for the discussion you are trying to recall
  4. Press down a couple of times to investigate if that one was the post you were trying to remember
  5. No? Goto 1, but press down a few more times than before

repeat until you remember Google crawls the site very well.

and by the way, the search box does not scroll as you press the down arrow

You're referring to the instant autocomplete results? If you want something more in depth, press "/", click "Discussions," type your query, and press enter.

I'm struggling with the search here too, it doesn't seem to like more than one search term and just returns no results.
