How long will laracast provide useless transfer rates?

It's over two days now. It's not like laracast is pricy but when buying subscription it didnt say it sucks that bad. Most movies i cant watch even in sd quality and download rate is 50 kb/s at best. Increase price, get better server or stop promising what You're not providing.

I have no problems. My download rate on here is my max connection (6MB/s) :S

Then what the hell is going on? I've suspected it's my internet provider (although speed test confirmed otherwise) but now i'm at different place with same result. Where should i ask for assistance regarding this issue?

Reached's avatar

No issues here, tried on multiple connections. It is most likely a problem on your end.

I'm living in Cambodia with terrible internet infrastructure but I can still watch these video in high quality most time without any problem.

Btw, the videos are hosted on Vimeo, so it would not have been Laracast to blame but them.

I'm living in Indonesia and I have 5Mb/s cable internet connection, pretty sucks for internet-dependent heavy works, but more than enough for streaming like these kind of videos. I still have to cheat my ISP using VPNs when I want to watch the videos though, since they blocked vimeo, reddit, etc.

When I saw “transfer rates” in the thread title I thought this was going to be about the subscription price and someone accusing Jeffrey of swindling foreign subscribers out of cash with unfavourable exchange rates :P

That's really confusing. Just checked from yet another location, another computer with the same result. Although speed test proves it's capable of 8Mb/s. The only thing in common is the internet provider in both locations. So i tried out my mobile network and guess what - it works... So question is: why Polish internet provider - Orange is somehow limited to access videos on laracast?

ardf16's avatar

Well, that would be painfull. And still might not solve the issue. Any other ideas? Come on like few million people uses this internet provider here... There must be something to do about it.

I suspect Orange are throttling Vimeo. A quick google reveals other people on Orange are having the same problem with Vimeo and YouTube.

Write an email to them that you change ISP if they don't "un-throttle" you, they might be able to do it and might have a nasty policy for doing it per request.

ardf16's avatar

Hmm, i'll give it a try but i guess the're to big to give a s...t.

Hello,

I'm also with Orange and i can't watch videos even in SD definition without any lags. If i try to download them, the dowload speed is a joke !! To bad ...

Weogrim's avatar

Hi

I'm in Poland, have good connection (not Orange), and i just want to see some lessons. There are free, but i have big lags. I paid subscription for good transfer but... Speed of download is 20 - 30 kB/s.

Someone have solution for this ?

graham's avatar

@weogrim it's been said previously. Some ISPs deliberately throttle video streaming services. It's not Laracasts making things slow.

willvincent's avatar

Videos are all hosted with vimeo, so any rate limiting/issues would be on the vimeo end.

Weogrim's avatar

@willvincent Oh, great, so i paid for subscription and can't watching video, becuase laracast use shitty server ? Great money spent....

davorminchorov's avatar

It's not Laracasts problem, it's your end. And blaming others won't solve the issue.

willvincent's avatar

@weogrim vimeo is one of the best video hosts (in terms of video quality, anyway).. Blaming laracasts is stupid, since the issue is definitely not here. Blaming vimeo is silly too since the issue is more likely on your end.

As I see it, you have a couple options;

  1. Contact your ISP and have them do some legwork to figure out why it's slow for you through their service, and if it's due to throttling (which they'll likely deny even if it's true) you could demand they unthrottle you.. that may or may not get you results.

  2. Use the download buttons on each video and watch them locally after downloading..

  3. as a last resort, ask Jeffrey for a refund if you're dissatisfied.

wizo's avatar

Since Poland is an eu member, the providers aren't allowed to throttle anymore since a few days.

I have to admit that some movies in some older series on some devices don't play, while other movies do play. This could be due to a lot of causes.

willvincent's avatar

I don't know that I've ever experienced a proxy that increased speed. :)

SaeedPrez's avatar

@willvincent haha, true.. but I guess if the site is blocked or limited somehow, then it could increase speed. I did actually try watching both Youtube and Laracasts videos via the browser proxy before I posted the link (which I found by searching google) and it worked better than I was expecting.

I've often come across ISP's that throttle some streaming sites like Vimeo and Youtube. @willvincent I found that going through a VPN made a big difference - Not all proxies/vpn's slow you down!

OP I hope you get this sorted, if not like others have said you may be able to get a refund.

For what it's worth, I've also noticed big decline in streaming quality over past 3 days, and my troubleshooting does not reveal any changes in PING/download speed through US ISP (Xfinity/Comcast with upgraded bandwidth option). I have tried watching these latest videos (EcmaScript series) through multiple computers and the latest Safari 9.0.3 and Native Chrome Version 50.0.2661.86 (64-bit), and Chrome Canary 52 browsers' / video players. Of note, other vimeo streaming videos are unaffected, and prior Laracasts episodes (before 28 Apr 2016) videos are not affected by this jittery playback. Maybe a different compression scheme on Vimeo for these latest videos? Resorting to downloading the full videos.
