Whats wrong with PHP

I started learning code by building websites, roughly 10 years ago. This naturally led me into learning PHP. I wasnt much of a coder or software designer until I started using Laravel and doing all the tutorials in Laracasts. I finally felt I knew a lot about mainstream programming and OOP. And I like it. I dont want to have to start again and learn something new. But I keep hearing all this negative talk of PHP being the past and not conventional. My understanding was that before Laravel came along PHP was very out of touch with modern programming standards.

Is PHP dying? Is it not up to scratch anymore? If so why so? It seems that software purists and serious techies dont like it and would avoid it if they could.

Should we all be moving away from PHP and learning node or elasticsearch etc? I hope not but I dont want to get left behind either. I'm very aware that posting this on a PHP/Laravel forum may not give me a independent opinion.

Do you live under a stone? PHP7 has been released and everyone is liking it so far! Two times faster and more possibilities. It's true that some programmers dislike PHP, but there are also programmers who dislike Java or C# and so on...

PHP will stick at least for the next 10 years if you would ask me... So don't worry about that now ;)

If you really want a new language to learn take a look at Javascript and especially NodeJs and front-end frameworks. They seem to be the popular thing at the moment ;)

Level 41

PHP powers 80% of the Web. In no situation whatsoever can that be considered dying.

I know Node and Elasticsearch are different things Im just throwing out random examples of other technologies one can use instead of PHP/Laravel.

Not a Troll just looking for opinions from the community. I have been hearing a lot lately about PHP being old hat and not considered best for most jobs. Mostly from really hot techies and software purists as it were.

Thanks for the comments.

I recommend switching from PHP to ElasticSearch, personally.

@JeffreyWay Thanks for waying in. No pun intended. Love Laracasts. Will have a good look at Elasticsearch.

@shanedara - I'm only kidding. Stick with PHP, but always be willing to learn new languages. It's good for you.
