Livewire 3.x vs Vue 3.x?

Hi guys!

I'm looking for real experiences around the debate, which technology/package to use, and when?

I've found a lot of examples, but still, I'm curious about, what to choose, for robust legacy PHP codebase refactoring to Laravel, and why? Two backend developers are working on it.

All answers are accepted, Thanks in advance

When deciding between Livewire and Vue for refactoring a robust legacy PHP codebase to Laravel, there are several factors to consider. Both technologies have their strengths and can be used effectively, but the choice often comes down to the specific needs of your project and the preferences of your development team.

Livewire:

Livewire is a full-stack framework for Laravel that makes it simple to build dynamic interfaces. It allows you to write minimal JavaScript, as it leverages the server-side rendering capabilities of PHP. With Livewire, you can bind your frontend directly to your Laravel backend, which can be a significant advantage when working with a PHP-centric team.

Pros:

  • Tight integration with Laravel.
  • Easier to pick up for developers who are more comfortable with PHP than JavaScript.
  • Less context switching between PHP and JavaScript.
  • Simplifies state management by keeping it on the server side.

Cons:

  • Potentially more server requests, which could impact performance.
  • Not as well-suited for highly interactive applications that require instant feedback, like complex SPAs.

Vue:

Vue is a progressive JavaScript framework that is often used to create single-page applications (SPAs). It is designed to be incrementally adoptable, which means you can sprinkle it into parts of your application as needed or build an entire SPA with it.

Pros:

  • Highly performant for client-side interactions.
  • Great for building complex, interactive user interfaces.
  • Large ecosystem with many plugins and community support.
  • Can be integrated with Laravel using tools like Inertia.js for a seamless backend-frontend connection.

Cons:

  • Requires a good understanding of JavaScript and modern front-end development practices.
  • More initial setup and tooling required compared to Livewire.
  • Can lead to more complex state management if not handled properly.

Decision Factors:

  1. Team Expertise: If your team is more comfortable with PHP and less experienced with modern JavaScript, Livewire might be the better choice. If your team is proficient in JavaScript and enjoys working with it, Vue could be more suitable.

  2. Application Complexity: For applications that require a lot of dynamic user interactions without full page reloads, Vue might be the better option. If the application is more traditional with fewer dynamic elements, Livewire could suffice.

  3. Performance: Consider the performance implications of server-side rendering (Livewire) versus client-side rendering (Vue). Vue might offer better performance for applications with heavy client-side interactions.

  4. Future Maintenance: Think about who will maintain the codebase in the future. Livewire might be easier to maintain for a team of PHP developers, while Vue might be preferable if you expect to have front-end specialists on the team.

In conclusion, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on your team's skills, the nature of the project, and your performance requirements. Both Livewire and Vue are excellent choices, but they serve different purposes. Evaluate the pros and cons in the context of your specific situation to make the best decision.

Could you confirm if the back-end developers assigned to the project have experience with either Livewire, Vue (Javascript)?

Livewire utilizes PHP, while Vue relies on JavaScript for the front end. Typically, Vue is combined with Inertia.js to connect the front end to the back end without requiring explicit API calls between the two sides.

Speaking personally, I lean towards Vue because of its flexibility and the well-organized folder structure it offers within projects.

@gych Well, a little bit of Livewire (in learning process). Vue was taken into consideration because of some experience in JS and JQuery.

What I haven't found was a good example, how to use Livewire in bigger projects, exactly what I'm interested the folder and logic structure

@valentin_vranic You can find some examples if you search via Google. I've heard from some that Livewire can get messy in bigger applications but can't confirm that from personal experience since I always use vue + intertia

Also when I ever decide to use a different back end tech in the future for any of these projects I can keep the vue front end end and will only have to do minor changes to connect this to the new back end

I ran Livewire in a project with 50,000 daily users, and in terms of memory usage and other resources, if you know Livewire well, you won’t face any issues. We redesigned the same project after three years and built it with Nuxt.js and Laravel for the backend.

In terms of development speed: definitely Livewire. In terms of server usage: no difference. In terms of package variety: definitely Nuxt.
