View Site After Site Domain Change from Default

I'm looking to enable SSL on my laravel forge site, however upon attempting to enable SSL it says:

SSL certificates can not be installed on a site that is still using "default" as the domain. You should create a new site matching the actual domain that you plan to use for the project or rename this site via the Meta tab.

However when I do change the site domain it is no longer accessible via IP address, however I'd like to ensure all is well before I change the DNS on the nameservers where I manage my custom domain. How am I even able to access the site after I change the site domain, before I set up my custom domain/DNS?

I'd optimally like to be able to enable SSL, test via the IP that it works, and then set up the domain.
