It would be nice to have permanent discounts for people from countries with poor currency. I waited about 6 months until Jeffrey made a promotion so I could purchase Laracasts subscription again :)

But I understand that it might be hard to control abuse over this system and that he needs to pay his bills in his own currency, so I'm fine with waiting for discounts.

Linus don't charge for his direct work on Linux, but he does charge for presentations, as far as I know, that's how he earn money. So Jeffrey could create packages for free, but sharing some deep knowledge have a cost (wait, isn't that what he does? :O)

Ever heard that to make money you need to spend money? ;)

What discounts? You're getting here an extremely cheap education. Even in universities they don't teach it. You must understand that this is not a hobby of Jeffrey, it's his daily job, he needs to make money somehow.

@henrique Read it buddy, my comment wasn't directly to you. I just think this whole post is absurd. Sorry for not being clear enough

@itzikbenh Oh, ok. It's just I didn't remember about people asking for discounts other then me (well, thinking about it, 100% discount is a discount after all haha).

@all Anyways, I'd like to demonstrate my point about countries with weak currency, here is a wikipedia table with minimum wage per country: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minimum_wages_by_country US (in $, per year): 15,080 Brasil (in $, per year): 4,751 So 9$ for someone with a minimum wage of 15k per year is fine, but for someone with 4.7k/year it's a lot. (this is just to illustrate the problem, the values probably aren't accurate (need to add cost of life to the formula) and might be outdated, but they give an idea that it does exist)

But I'd like to emphasize that I understand that discount like this is not possible (both in a technical way to prevent abuse and in the way that Jeffrey pays his bills in USD not my currency or any other in the world), so I'm fine with waiting for the global discounts that Jeffrey gives about twice a year.

@kashaigili Maybe i'm one of those people who need these videos for free, we're a poor country too and it's not easy to pay online for anything, Even though, Asking anyone to give his work for free isn't acceptable by me.

Hmmm, seems like the OP isn't trying to be rude ... just coming from a different place than many of us. Give the OP a chance. I really think people could be a little less rude when replying.

As for the wage in equality: better to view it as what percentage of an average salary for that country is used to buy a Big Mac (used to be a loaf of bread but times have changed). I used to be able to get full and drunk for about US$20 but since I've moved to the states I'd imagine for the same amount of food and drinks in a similar restaurant (nothing fancy but not some all-you-can eat place either) it'd be closer to US$80 or $90.

As for donations: I doubt if @JefferyWay would be making much money, adsense would be a better revenue source.

Even though, I strongly agree that $9 / month is barely 2 trips to Starbucks or even a decent sized MacDonalds Value pack.

How many people are actually paying here? Anything above 370 members would be a pretty decent rate of return on this...

I hope Jeffrey will not only make all the videos free, but pay me a monthly fee of 10$ for watching them.

Thank you.

On a more serious note - for all those people wanting discounts just because they're living in a poor country or wanting videos free - just remember Jeffrey lives in the USA. If 9$ per month makes him pay his bills and live the whole month, then I'm more than happy to pay for it and let the guy create more videos. I was just afraid the prices might go up because this is so damn cheap for what you're getting.

Agree with the majority on this - Laracasts tutorials are some of the highest quality I've seen online. Mr Way has been teaching me for years an the content he puts out is well worth the money.

I don't have a regular subscription here as I don't develop in Laravel 100% of the time so remember that you can buy just one months subscription and download the videos you need - there's nothing stopping you doing that.

I started out in the software industry a very long time ago ... probably before many/most of you were born :o)

In 1985, EVERYTHING was charged for ... I mean everything !!

I can not believe that we live in a time when you go to the internet and you just download a whole framework plus all kinds of packages for FREE ... .it is insane and it drives me nuts ... I mean, I go to a prospective client and this expectation that everything should be / must be free has reached epidemic proportions. Then you go to Expression Engine and Ellis labs struggles because people won't pay the $300 for a licence inc. support. When I first started on Laracasts I wrote to Jeffrey and told him he needs to charge more. Lynda dot com charges a $25 for a basic subscription.

Now, lets' not be too hard. This guy is from Tanzania and probably struggles with English too. I have traveled many times to the so called "3rd World" for business and it is tough out there .. really ... but they are all really good people all with smiles on their face.

PHPAcademy is how I learned the majority of my PHP skills. They started doing Laravel tutorials (after I learned CI from them) and I kept skipping them because they seemed overwhelming. However, I did actually follow through on one Laravel series from PHPAcademy and I saw how powerful it could be. Then I saw Laracasts mentioned in the comments of one of the videos and came here. Signed up the same day and I feel like 6 month's later I have vastly increased my PHP skills and I am decently well versed in Laravel.

So yes, @polarcubs has a great suggestion. Check out PHPAcademy on YouTube.

When I started learning PHP, I was a student, I didn't have the money to purchase a VPS or even a low cost shared hosting. I used to deploy my apps on free web hosting providers (I remember "freehostia" being my favorite). There are a lot of free resources online, I passed a lot of time reading other people's blogs, articles, discussion forums and free video tutorials. Then I started doing professional work and now I can afford myself many things.

Laracasts is premium quality. Jeffrey Way puts a lot of efforts into the videos. $9 is quite cheap compared to some other places where you can get contents of similar quality. And some of the videos on this site is completely free. What he is charging is totally fair. We should not ask him to give everything away for free.

I understand that people from some countries can't afford the subscription and they have the right to learn. My suggestions would be to focus more on available free resources. Watch the free videos here, also there are many community contributed free videos on Laravel on Youtube - check them out. Read blog posts, read through this discussion board, ask for help. Spend some time. I hope you shall be able to learn enough to land a job and soon afford Laracasts' premium contents.

If you're hard working, you will find a way to learn. My best wishes for you!

Guys,

Jeffrey has invested so much time, energy, thought and effort into the service he is providing. Imagine if you were in his shoes - wouldnt you appreciate being paid for such a project. As a senior adult, I can tell you this is the best learning investment you will make. Why does everyone feel they are entitled to free stuff? Join for life, support Jeffrey in his endeavors - he will make you, me and the rest of developers better having this tool available!

A guy has to eat ya know..hey I have about a month's worth of backlog work that I would like you to do for FREE.

Jeffery Way must be paid with the good amount for his hard work. Think about him and the country/place where he lives is expensive and it will be hard to manage without money there.

Still, he is charging very tiny amount for the subscription. Hats off to him and his efforts.
