index.php is displayed as text

I have newly hosted my site on digital ocean and instead of displaying the site, the index.php file is displayed as text in the browser

Sounds like your php isn't installed correctly, try to re-install.

Some how i couldn't get it right with Nginx. I tried LAMP and was able to get my site up and running. Thanks for the reply jlrdw.
