Customize content based on country

Hey all!!

Any suggestions of how to handle country content localization? To be clear i am not talking about translations but let's say for example that in a marketing page you want to display content specific to France or add country specific navigation links to you main navigation. How do you handle country detection? Do you then store it in a cookie ? Is it better to provide a country selection to your users ? Thanks a lot for any advices!!
