What Are You Missing?
The previous forum software for Laracasts, Esotalk, is the result of hundreds of hours worth of work. So, naturally, this new forum is missing some of those bells and whistles.
I'd like to add many of them back in over the coming week(s). My question to you is: what are you very much missing from the old forum?
I'll start:
- First up, I'll re-add the "mark as answered" feature. That's at the top of my list. (Update: Done)
- I want to add an activity feed, so that you can view a user's forum history. Things like, "JeffreyWay responded to a conversation....". Stuff like that. (Update: Done)
- I want the ability to @message a person, and have them receive a notification alert in the navigation bar. (Update: Done)
when i hit full screen I can't return to normal and i need to refresh. And offcource cam't submit reply.
Escape will return you from fullscreen, but I agree that it's a little awkward. I may disable that feature completely, if people don't find it useful or intuitive.
Include the username of the person who last posted when viewing the listing of all the threads.
It's not a feature that the other forum had, but I would like two filters: - Show only unread posts - Show only unread posts where I have posted
I know it seems like a minor thing, but I really liked that the forum actually took advantage of AJAX when viewing individual posts and perusing the overall forum. I'd love to have that back.
I like it, when two pagination bars exist. One on the top and one on the bottom side.
@thepsion5 - There's a little AJAX implemented - for deleting posts, opting in to notifications, etc., but yeah, most of the pages do a full post back.
On threads with multiple pages, I'd like to be redirect to the last page where my post was created upon submission.
Bonus points if, using anchors, my browser jumps straight to my post!
@mrterryh - Agree. I'll make a note to make that the default.
@JeffreyWay thank you! Also, some sort of "like/thanks" feature. Would be perfect for your post above.
From page 2 onward, I'd like the first post (the OP one) to be closed (and eventually be able to open it) because it seems like all the other post, distracting from reading.
I agree with @mrterryh, some kind of "like" feature would be nice, so many good replies need some exposure!
Not sure if this was already mentioned, but perhaps when clicking on a post, it takes you to the first response you haven't read? Or perhaps when clicking on the response-count from the main page, it takes you to the last response?
@mikebronner - Yeah, the response count will take you to the last reply. I'll add that in very soon.
Possibly display users' recent posts and discussions on their profile to give more purpose to it?
@mrterryh - That too is 100% on my todo list.
Oh, also, perhaps update the reply count to not include the original post? That way we can easily identify topics that need attention. :)
Hey, all posts within the tabs(All, General Discussion, etc..) are descending ordered. So the older posts are on the top.
@ax3l - Thanks! Fixed and pushed.
The Q&A category.
On mobile, there is a lack of sense of where you are. When reading a thread, there's no quick way to get back to the listing of threads (without clicking on the menu icon and then "discuss"), and it would be nice to have pagination at the top of the page as well. Everything is also left aligned which leaves a fair unused margin to the right.
Mobile definitely needs some work. I'l be working on that a bit tomorrow.
If the person creating the post is a paid user they probably don't need the human verification to show... Spammers usually aren't in the habbit of giving money out :)
@tomschlick - True. I could remove it on that condition.
I saw a comment about the font on the announcement thread. Seconded! The text is a bit faint. Actually, the font weight of the text as I type this is much better!
I'd like to have infinite scroll. In my opinion, pagination is better for tabular data. When reading I prefer my scroll wheel.
And the "Want an email each time somebody responds to this thread?" is a nice feature which took me way to long to find. Maybe increase the font-size and contrast?
Update:
I see there is some free space on the right side (desktop). Maybe add a list of last 5? visited threads there. And as a bonus make the threads with new replies bold... Makes it easier to stay updated instead of email notifications.
- Infinite scroll would be nice. I may try to add that.
- Threads are already bold, if they've been updated since the last time you visited.
- I'll plan on bumping up the font color a few clicks.
I would suggest:
- using ids on comments so you can copy the url a comment for reference
- pagination links shouldn't be blue and maybe center it
- the font on the start's tooltip doesn't look good, maybe bump the size a little bit
You're doing a great job, keep going!
Since there are may cases where a discussion references a video, it would be great if there was some short hand for links to lessons and/or series. It would be similar to the @User, but would trigger a live lookup of video titles.
Additionally, now that the discussion is able to be tied into the code base, I think that replacing the disqus discussions at the bottom of the videos with a special thread with the video title would make everything a little more tied together.
Finally, I think that there could be some ranking about a person based on how long they have been a member, how many videos that they have completed...
