Server Redirect From Public to Project Folder

I'm trying to get my project working on shared hosting (not negotiable ~ trust me I've tried). at the moment my issue is I'm getting the folder of the project insted of the loging page. What I've done is upload laravel to a folder at the same level as public_html and symlinked public_html to the public folder within laravel. if you click on the public folder it will seem to not move but still reloads the page. ie its redirecting back to that folder. Does anyone know how to fix this.
