While VSCode is a good editor, PHPStorm and the Laravel Plugin are way better in my opinion. If you can afford it use the latter.

Php storm vs vscode with laravel extension
Hi is vscode with the laravel extension as good as php storm and idea plugin?
And also why has the guy who made idea plugin not ported it to vscode?

If you plan to use PHP and Laravel exclusively, PHPStorm is a great choice. However, if you switch from one tech to another, VSCode is a better fit. Now, you could also have both, which is even better, but remember PHPStorm is not free.

@Cushty Probably because they want you to use PHPStorm :)

@Cushty The internal architecture of PhpStorm and VSCode are totally different, so "porting" is not the correct word. They would be entirely independent products. That's why we focused fully on PhpStorm and are happy that the Laravel team created a VS Code extension.
