laravel/installer: "Docker is not running."

I try to install Laravel with the installer CLI on my new Mac, but laravel new is greeting me with this: "Docker is not running."

Docker is not installed on my system and the documentation doesn't hint about that. The GitHub repository of laravel/installer does not contain this message.

I am confused.
