Laravel 5.6 is not out yet. You can get access to the current 5.6 branch via Github: https://github.com/laravel/framework/tree/5.6
It's currently using "phpunit/phpunit": "~6.0"

As of Laravel 5.6 it requires PHPUnit 7.* see https://laravel.com/docs/5.6/upgrade#upgrade-5.6.0
You should update the phpunit/phpunit dependency of your application to ~7.0.

But 5.5 to 5.6 is kind of a downgrade since 5.5 is LTS.

@jlrdw It's definitely not a downgrade... It's true the version does not have 3 years support, however it has a ton of new features as well! If you stay up to date you can better update to the latest version!
