How to use faker for dob custom?Thu-01-70

I try to use faker for date of birth between specific year but its unable

'date_of_birth' =>  $facker->date($format = 'D-m-y', $max = '2012',$min = '1990'),

but its generated Thu-01-70 but I want like this 02/11/2005

    ->format('d/m/Y'), // outputs something like 17/09/2001
