Why would you want to do it with Laravel when you have great solutions like Prestashop or Magento? You will spend more time and money doing it from scratch with Laravel. Unless you do it for learning and that's is something else. Sorry for not answering your question, but I'm trying to give you a better solution and save you a lot of time.

Performance is mostly server resources and networking, yes there are ways to tweak Laravel to run faster. But utilizing something like aws can be worth while.

That said, few apps I've worked on handle 10,000 plus request per minute with out issues spread out on three aws servers behind a load balancer.

One is gamesmart.com. Servers are located in Singapore with buckets through out the world for game files. We had issues but it wasn't Laravel. Mainly cfg of aws and specifically the s3 buckets. Something to do with naming conventions for proper use of sharding the files over many disks. Not quite sure, wasn't the server guy.

Any case proper analysts is key on performance. Google, new relic etc well worth implementing.
