Check if stripe customer is subscribed (middleware)

Just trying to get my head around Stripe and Laravel Cashier. I'm using checkout and billing portal. I've managed to send the user to Stripe's checkout page and then update their subscription but struggling with the middleware because there no subscription information in my database other than stripe_id.
