portfolio friendly project

Hey there,

Noob question but really interested in figuring this out. I am going through the various tutorials and learning a lot about modern PHP and laravel and have come to decision to start my very own project so that I can build my portfolio to submit to job applications. I am unsure what exactly the project should be because I don't know what would be considered to difficult for me to complete or too easy to not impress an employer.

For the senior devs on here. If you are looking to hire a PHP developer that would be using lets say a VUE/Laravel stack what kind of project would you consider impressive. I have a BSc in Computer Science already and also have a general understanding of programming as a whole. I just don't know what exactly to build that will showcase all aspects of concepts and techniques that would make an employer impressed.

I am open to all ideas :)

its not about complexity its about showing you can do stuff & more importantly your code follows the best practises.. of course a simple site (static) wont do you any favours but something like a shopping site/ forum (not too complex) can be good..

one other thing is pull requests ie. contributing to os projects..

I came on this board today with the same question in mind, I been given instructions to go back over php practitioner its been about a year since last summer internship (didn't do much last summer) looking for some kind of guide on what side projects to complete to use what I've learned from, in the following order

  1. php practioner
  2. OOP
  3. laravel scratch 5.4 I was told to watch these videos then actually do some practical as I go by my mentor but that was it.

tldr; So I'm looking for simple project ideas as well <3 ps. recent CS grad as well! what up!!! @WILDSIDE

I watched them all last summer I have to watch them over again, all I can say is definitely take your time with php practitioner ! jamesm0025@gmail.com email me and I'll send you my assignment pdfs from my web class this past semester/(slides), the assignments were simple and really made this php stuff actually work. Tutorials are garbage if you don't apply them 150 % literally useless. James-N-M is my Github facebooks james moore get at me and well learn again together I start next Monday at work again. @wildside
