I used hostgator for 2 years despite people complaining that EIG companies had bad service. I got good service and they had backups for me and solved hacker problems every time. The SSL issue became the dealbreaker, though, after Google mandated the change...
I moved to BlueHost and have been happy there so far. Competitive rates, customer service about the same level. SSL certificates have been easy to deal with, except for a limit on 20 per week which caused a hiccup at domain transfer time but shouldn't be a problem going forward. And again, that's not the host's fault, really, but their partner.
I have business level hosting and that's an important consideration, ie. not entry level. Even if you look at a comparison between hostgator and Blue host here https://www.reviewsed.com/hostgator-vs-bluehost/
You will see a clear edge at many levels of features and offerings. Though many still like hostgator and rightly so but i have been having good day with blue host till now.
