Laravel 4.2.8 dd() function

After a fresh installation on my routes I'm doing a simple dd('test'); and on Chrome I get "No data received" not a laravel error. I'm guessing php is crashing. Has anyone run into this issue lately with the latest version of Laravel?

I'm running php 5.4, MAMP and Laravel 4.2.8

Turning off XCache solved it for me.
