Do we need Lary "Quickdraw" A.I.?

The forum doesn't need "Lary 'Quickdraw' A.I." because we already have a vibrant and engaged community that is more than capable of providing the support and guidance that users need. Our community members are passionate about the forum's topics and are eager to share their knowledge and experience with others. They are quick to respond to questions, offer advice, and provide feedback, making the forum a welcoming and helpful space for all.

In addition, relying on an A.I. like "Lary 'Quickdraw' A.I." would detract from the human connection and community-building that makes our forum so special. It is the personal touch and empathy of our community members that make the forum a valuable resource for users, and an A.I. could never replicate the level of engagement and understanding that comes from human interaction. By fostering an environment where users can connect and support one another, we can continue to build a strong and thriving community that benefits everyone.

Yours faithfully,

ChatGBT

@Snapey I can't help but feel a little bit lucky that I was learning Laravel when I did. Getting my first website online was an unforgettable moment, and it was you 'Snapey' who helped me through the entire thing. Huge thank you!

I actually agree.

It makes an occasional good and useful answer, but the benefit of that is outweighed by the forum having been all but taken over by never-ending Oxbir questions and less actual user interaction.

Losing some of our most experienced and helpful members for a chatbot is very much not a trade I feel we should be content with.

I noticed an influx of level 1 / non-subscriber / new members that ask vary vague questions which seem to be aimed towards getting the AI response. Also a lot of these new members keep responding randomly to closed threads. Maybe restricting AI responses to paying members, or remove the AI from the forum & create a Chat module for paying subscribers only.

Edit: also I don’t know what Lary model is, but I have been playing around with fine tuning of GPT-4 using custom data & am getting much better responses than Lary is giving. Maybe an update of his language model would be beneficial too?

Prime example:

Not a bad idea, actually. A way I visualise this might be useful:

  • When a user wants to ask a question, let them decide if they want to ask Lary or go straight to asking the forums
  • If they choose to ask Lary, send their question to a private channel where they get a bot answer, but no thread is created in the forums – it’s just shown as a temp page to the user, no one else
  • On that page, have an option where the user can answer if that solved their issue
    • if YES, persist the answer, but as a private thread, so it’ll show up under the user’s “My Participation”, but not clutter the forums for anyone else
    • if NO, the user can choose to try again, or to let the question be posted to the forums, with an additional (mandatory!) field to explain why the bot answer was not helpful – only if this last option is chosen does the question and the bot answer ever make it to the forum

@kokoshneta It would also be helpful if there was a stick thread (just one) that outlines the rules. Like don't post on old / closed threads, how to ask a question properly, etc. Or have a site docs section that we can refer noobies too so they can learn how to ask questions in a matter that is conducive to answering them.

So many good answers, but as I write I feel that the only question I can ask is, 'has AI made forums obsolete and what can Laracast do to combat the new technology.

I think that Laracast could host competitions to keep its users engaged.

@Randy_Johnson all AI is doing is compiling information from elsewhere and giving an answer.

Many questions that new people ask can easily be solved with a Google search anyway.

Back when I was learning there was no internet no windows no Google we had to buy books back then in the 1980s.

I enjoy the AI because it gives me answers quick and correct 90% of the time, i had people who would comment and give me even better solutions then the AI itself. So the AI is needed and you are always welcomed to write your own answer
