DNS Nameservers

Let's say I have a domain I purchased, example.com, and a vps purchased through a provider like Linode or Digital Ocean. Now let's say I set the nameservers for example.com from where I purchased the domain to point to Linode's nameservers (ns1.linode.com, ns2.linode.com ... ns5.linode.com) and then through Linode I add a DNS record for example.com and set an A record to point to the server's IP address.

My question is what is stopping someone else on Linode adding a DNS entry for example.com on their account and then their server is the one serving example.com? Or how does it know you own the domain?

Note: This is just a theoretical question and I don't actually own example.com.

Thank you. That helped me understand it a lot better.
