Hetzner Cloud vs Digital Ocean

Hi, I've been using Forge for years now with Digital Ocean and recently discovered Hetzner Cloud. The pricing between DO droplets and Hetzner cloud based on vCPU's and Memory is significant. Almost to good to be true. Is there a catch?

I personally use Hetzner and its working great!

I think a big reason is location. Hetzner only have data centers in 3 locations

  • Data Center Park Nuremberg, Germany
  • Data Center Park Falkenstein, Germany
  • Data Center Park Helsinki, Finland

Thanks @sinnbeck! What server do you suggest for one (Statamic) site with approx 100.000 visits per month?

Honestly I cant say. We have alot fewer to our sites. (fewer users but high cpu and ram usage as its used for statistical calculations for graphs). We run it on a cx41

But I am sure you find a server that is more or less the same specs as the one you have with DO?

Luckily you can scale up very fast in their interface.

Yes, I guess you're right. I'm going to try something and measure the performance. Thanks!

I moved the site to a droplet at digital ocean and a hetzner server and tested them side by side.. I didnt really see any performance difference at all. Now I only use digital ocean for backups :)

Interesting, that is awesome! Do you backup to DO storage?

I use ploi.io instead of forge, and just have it make backup of everything to DO spaces (it uses the S3 api)

Ok, thanks. I haven't used Ploi.io maybe I should check that out as well. Does it have advantages over Forge?

I have never tried forge myself. Just stumbled upon ploi on twitter, and it has been awesome :)
