Understanding the query builder used in Laravel

As I understand Eloquent is unique to Laravel but how about the query builder, was that created by Taylor as well?

Is the query builder used in Laravel unique to the framework? In other words, did Taylor create it or it uses a common query library used in some other frameworks?
