*.env file of Lumen can be read without any problems

The *.env file of Lumen can be read without any problems. Why is it so?

I had to set up an htaccess-deny manually. Isn't that out of the box?

index.php and .env files are in the same directory? in root directory?

Thank you for your answer. No, the index.php was not in the same folder.

Now, it only seems to be temporary. I can no longer reproduce it. It seems to be ok now.
