I think ChatGPT is great if you see it as boilerplate or codegen tool on steroids. But honestly, for the reasons you mention at the end of the video, I don't think it's a great teacher :/. If anything, when you're learning it's important that you're told what's the best way to do something. Or at least it's important to mention that something is simplified for learning purposes, so that students are aware.

Also something I don't see mentioned enough is that ChatGPT works well with popular frameworks like Laravel. But as soon as you start doing something more specific, like using a package or working on an existing codebase, it has literally no idea of what it's doing. Even if you feed it all the code that exists about that package/existing project, it'll probably make mistakes as well because there isn't enough information just in the code for it to understand how it fully works (or why some things are done a certain way).

I'm sure this will improve with future versions (as it's already doing with GPT-4), but ultimately I don't think it's ever going to solve these fundamental problems. The good news for me is that it actually removes all the boilerplate and repetitive work, which is awesome. For example, I look forward to not writing forms ever again xD. But the actual reason why we need developers, is to solve specific problems understanding the context and business needs of a situation.

So I don't know what will happen in the long run, but at least for the foreseable future (certainly, for anyone who's learning to program today), I wouldn't be worried. Who I'd be worried about is people who are willing to follow these tool's instructions blindly. In the end, if you're asking ChatGPT to do something you wouldn't already know how to do yourself, I think it's potentially a problem. Because 99% of the time it will give you the correct answer, but if you can't tell when that 1% shows up, you'll eventually mess up.
