Depends if the hosting you're on is giving you what you need? I'm not sure what Forge supports but here's a video of Jeffrey explaining some of them https://laracasts.com/series/server-management-with-forge/episodes/2
Can I use Bluehost?
So I started a project some time ago that I've been hosting on Bluehost. This site is already live in production but I will be working on new features etc for a long time. I realized a bit to late that I really want Forge to help me manage my site... I was researching transferring my domain over to another place.. and hosting from somewhere else.. Or maybe I can keep my domain on bluehost yet point it to another hosting service..
Bluehost VPS uses CentOS and what I'm wondering is if Forge will work with it? I can't find anything on the forge site that talks about which hosting services that can be used etc.. If I could avoid transferring my hosting and domain then I would be really happy, and thought I would ask here on these forums as I continue to do more research into my options.
Thanks in advance for any insights.
Forge assumes Ubuntu, and even specifically Ubuntu's LTS release (14.04 currently). Other distributions will not work because of assumptions built into Forge.
Any host that will work will require you to:
- Be able to use Ubuntu 14.04
- Give full SSH access
This negates most shared hosting sites. For Bluehost, I think you'd have to use their Dedicated servers (even then, if they only give you CentOS, then it won't be usable with Forge).
If any hosting forces any kind of cPanel/Plesk control panel on you, then that likely also will not work due to competing configurations. In fact, cPanel/WHM products only support CentOS/RedHat-like distributions. However, I believe Plesk supports Ubuntu.
Forge is best used with VPS-only hosting such as Linode, Rackspace Cloud, Digital Ocean and AWS.
