Spark user subscribed but still shows subscribe message

Just started working with Spark subscription model, and set up striped plan and keys. I successfully used the stripe test card details to subscribe, however the spark settings page still shows You are not subscribed to a plan. Choose from the plans below to get started. on the subscription tab - how does it determine this ? and wondering why out of the box it is not working - i wouldn't expect it to show this message if subscribed

Edit: it seems like the JS function activeSubscription() is returning false and on closer inspection there is no subscriptions element on the this.billable object ?
