Mac shortcut for bringing open apps to front

I've seen Jeff use a shortcut in several of his videos where he is in one app, say Sublime, and then he opens a search bar and begins typing an app name, like "Chr" for Chrome, selects Chrome, and then the open (not launch a new instance) Chrome instance comes into view.

Can someone tell me how to do this on OS High Sierra, and/or the app Jeff might be using to do this? I'm looking for the shortcut to the finder/search where you can begin typing an app name, see it in autocomplete, select it, and if there is an already open instance of the app, it will come into focus (top of open windows stack).

Also, if Jeff has a post on his shortcuts and apps he uses for productivity, I would love to see it. He really has a great setup for moving between apps quickly via shortcuts to work fast and efficiently.

Thanks!

Thanks for the answer and quick reply! I'm buying the power pack today.

Jeff use Spotlight Search. Just hit cmd+spacebar and start typing the app name.

Spotlight search opens up new instances of apps for me. For example, if I have Chrome open already, and then type Chrome in spotlight, it opens a new instance of Chrome and what I want is the already open instance to be brought to the front, and no new instance opened.

Strange, spotlight doesn't open a new instance for me. If the app isn't loaded it loads it, if it is loaded it just switches to it (just like selecting it when cmd+tab to it).

Okay. Checking spotlight again, it is opening Chrome as I would expect. I could have sworn it was launching a new instance before, but, clearly I'm new to working on a Mac :-)

But I am going to check out Alfred also. Thanks for all the informative replies!
