Mostly they are the same; but the DBMS are diverging slightly, and there have been moves to establish a separate driver for MariaDB so they can be maintained separately.

Hi,
Just noticed in config/database.php theres a connection for MariaDB and MySQL, just wondered if there's any difference/benefit of one over the other? My assumption is that they're the same.
I've tried to Google and search on this forum to see if anyone has asked/answered previously but it's just MariaDB vs MySQL discussions.
