Access session from controller constructor possible?

I've hit a similar issue with trying to access auth::user from constructors, am I right in thinking I cannot access the session from the request in a controller constructor in L8 because it just doesn't seem to work and not obvious why.. This used to work back in the Laravel 4 and maybe early 5 days.
