What is the problem, if any, with cgi.fixpathinfo = 1 in php.ini?

In many howto such as https://www.mynotepaper.com/install-latest-php-php-fpm-on-centos-7/ and https://eldernode.com/how-to-install-laravel-5-6-with-nginx-on-ubuntu-18-04/ they say that we must set cgi.fixpathinfo=0 in php.ini. What problems are created, if any, when we use the default? Nothing about that is mentioned in the official installation guide.
