Laravel 5 Release Date Discussion

Howdy!

I'm hoping to start a more serious discussion about Laravel release dates than the usual "are we there yet?" type posts with folks that are more familiar with Laravel's history and current state of things.

If we're past mid December and the release date is currently slated for some time in January, is it not too much to ask for a committed release date? Or at least an outline of what still needs to be done so that we have a higher level idea of where the current version of Laravel 5 is by comparison to the projected final project?

On one hand, Laravel doesn't owe me anything and this is Taylor's thing, on the other hand Laravel is getting big, very big, and lot of people depend on it for important life effecting projects.

For instance, we have a new project we're going to start working on in early January 4th for a February 10th release date. We don't have an unlimited budget and we don't want to build it in 4 and port to 5. The main things we're excited about in 5 is the social login handling and the handling of front-end code.

We definitely want to be on the new Laravel 5 architecture, but are unsure as to when we can start developing. Something as simple as "the social logins piece is solid, you can use that with confidence" or "the front-end stuff is cool, just follow the laracasts and you wont be wasting your time" would be big for us.

Cheers, -Ryan

The short answer is that you can't rely on the release date, as there isn't an official one, and if there was, I wouldn't trust it at this stage.

I agree that the release schedule should something the Laravel community does more about. I would also like to see LTS releases that we know we can rely on for a few years ahead.

If in doubt, stick to something that will work.
