Is GitHub actually free hosting?

Hi everyone,

I'm learning about Git and Github in a Laracasts series. I was wondering: Is GitHub actually free and save hosting for your project?

So, if I maka a backup to Github and my computer crashes, is my backup then still alive?

Thanks for your answer! Jeroen

Yes it's free and yes it keeps the code for your project safe.

But, why don't they go bankrupt? Because for services like Google or Apple cloud hosting you do have to pay, because they have to maintain servers. Isn't it?

Sorry, I just can't believe it's free.

@jeroenvanrensen GitHub isn’t a “host” as in a web host. It’s offers free hosting of your repositories, but it also has other revenue sources.

If it did run in to any monetary issues, it doesn’t hurt that it’s now owned by one of the wealthiest companies in the world (Microsoft).
