So OVH (a big hosting company in the EU) is giving away free .ovh domains for a year to customers of theirs. Maybe someone here has a service with them

If I remember correctly, companies now can register new top-level domains with ICANN for $100K.

Yeah sounds about right. From the previous link, they submitted a request back in 2012
