Switch from host gator to digital ocean and forge

I have a site thats been active for 2 years and hosted on host gator. How do I transfer my domain name to forge and digital ocean. My other site is php but not laravel. I totally redid it with laravel and need to host the laravel site on forge/digital ocean. Can anyone give me a step by step on switching domain over so i can get rid of old site and use new site. Thanks!

Is your domain name registered with host gator? Is so, youll first probably want to change your domain registration. There are several domain registrars out there so do some googling and find one you like. Once you find one, youll probably have to unlock the domain name and get some sort of key from host gator. The process differs from service to service so you should check with host gator. The whole process can take a week or two.
Once you switched domain registrars, you simply have to point your domain name to your new server in the domain registrar.

No. Just sign up for digital ocean and forge, set up your new site. Once everything is running just point your domain name to your new server IP. Then just let your other hosting expire, but make sure to renew your domain name.

Not sure if you have email, but make sure you switch that as well. Ask your hosting company, give them a call or email for help. You're already paying them, let them do some customer service.
