Forge on Ubuntu 12

Hello,

at the moment forge is requiring Ubuntu 14. My Hosting Provider can only provide servers with Ubuntu 12 atm.

Are there any know problems if i want to use Custom VPS on Ubuntu 12 instead of 14?

Thanks, Best Pascal

Why can they not use 14.*? There shouldn't be any differences, 10.04 is still the same, just updates to packages etc. There could be things that are harder to run/get working in each version.

The main problem is, there virtualization system dosen't support 14 yet to 100%. There are still some missing Baremetal-Tools/Driver. And KVM over IP is not working perfectly yet. I am sure 14 is already working but is not 99,999% stable as there SLA requires. Thats why there are Stil testing and optimizing.

If your hosting lets you create and destroy servers, I'd try it out and see. Most packages/repositories used will still support 12.04. I think the package repository for php 5.6 event supports 12.04 as well.

There may be some things that assume/specifically get versions for "trusty" over "precise", but I wouldn't know for sure.

Its not as easy as on DigitalOcean where I can just spin up and destroy the servers. I can order one but then i have this one for a Month. I can always scale up or down but i am committed for at least a month.

I found a alternative Hoster that can deliver the services we need + Ubuntu 14. So everything is fine now:)

Yeah they sounded a bit dodge not being able to virtualise a new OS. Plenty of others do it just fine.
