My feeling is it's not an "exact science" so to speak :) Everyone has their own opinions on this topic. So far I've only implemented "feature" tests I think hitting endpoints and expecting the correct data. If shit breaks during test after a php version update or a package update at least you have a starting point from where to start looking and you know what works and what doesn't. For my use case it's good enough I think, not really chasing 100% test coverage of every function and model and controller.
