Recording One Laracasts Course

As you can imagine, we're constantly in the market for new courses and instructors. What you may NOT realize, however, is it's not so easy to commission these courses. Perhaps, many developers incorrectly assume that there's an endless sea of competition to the point that it's not even worth trying. Not true.

We're temporarily bumping our compensation package to a figure that is traditionally reserved for the most respected and notable developers in our industry.

Here's how it works:

Step 1: Prepare a Sample

It's difficult for us to commission a course from you, if we don't have anything to review up front. Have you ever created a video tutorial before? Show us! Did you plan and release a full course? DEFINITELY share it. And if you've never prepared a video before, well, figure it out! Play around, and see what you come up with. Then send it to us.

Here's a few things to keep in mind:

  • Unique: What makes your video interesting? What are you doing that's unique? Don't do what everyone else is doing.
  • Subpar: 80% of the submissions we've received over the years are subpar. Anyone can record their screen. Anyone can speak in a monotone voice. Anyone can skip the editing process entirely and submit a messy video. But you won't. :)
  • Camera: People want to see your face. Figure out your camera setup. It's not enough anymore to turn on your blurry laptop webcam and press record. Do it properly. Use a good camera, purchase a couple lights, and get to work. This can be intimidating at first, but luckily there are endless videos on Youtube that will teach you. If you want to jump to the front of the line, don't skip this step.

Step 2: Say Hello

Send an email to [email protected]. Introduce yourself, share a link to your sample video, and talk about what you feel most qualified teaching. Do you spend your days knee-deep in the Livewire world? Then, maybe that's a good place to start. Do you have a knack for simplifying confusing database concepts? Great! We need that, too.

Don't submit a ping-pong application. These are the sorts of emails that exclude all of the details that we need to make a decision, requiring us to respond with a request for more information. Instead, anticipate what we might ask, and provide it at the start.

Step 3: Start Recording

If accepted, we'll invite you to our project workspace to begin preparations. We'll provide you with a casual checklist of things to work on. Generally, you'd have a few months to complete your course. Usually, that splits into recording one video per week. Easily doable, even if you have a full-time job!

The key thing to remember is that your personal brand is on the line here. Tens or even hundreds of thousands of people will watch your content. Let other people phone it in. That's not your style. Do a good job, and watch your reputation in this space go through the roof.

Step 4: Cash In

Within 48 hours of submitting your completed course and assets, we'll pay you in full via a wire transfer. At that point, we'll get to work finalizing your course and preparing it to go live on the site!

Step 5: Rinse and Repeat

If you enjoyed the process, we'll invite you to submit again!
