Don't know if others had this issue but I had a weird git commit loop happening as lint-staged was unstaging some files initially modified by prettier.

npm run format would run prettier which would change formating on a bunch of existing files (like views setup from "breeze"). I decided to do a bulk commit of all of the changes, but then husky's pre-commit lint-staged would unstage a number of the files before the commit completed. At first I thought perhaps I missed adding those to be staged. When I staged them and tried again, the pre-commit would unstage them all and git would exit saying I had nothing staged.

Files that were changed by prettier that successfully committed all had "bigger" changes like the order of the tailwind class tags. The files that were being unstagged simply had spacing or EOL changes. For example prettier changed: resources/views/pages/auth/confirm-password.blade.php file from:

to

new #[Layout('layouts.guest')] class extends Component {

*Note, just the ending { was bumped to previous line. This change was then unstaged by the pre-commit hook lint-staged.

If I removed the

'**/*': 'prettier --write --ignore-unknown',

line out of the lint-staged.config.js file, then it stopped unstaging them and I could successfully commit those changes. That would suggest it is an issue with prettier running under lint-staged.

When looking for solutions, I stumbled across a package called pretty-quick which is installed via npm install --save-dev pretty-quick (needs the other prettier and tailwind pluggins to remain installed).

With that package I could changed my package.json file from:

"format": "npx prettier --write resources/"

to:

"format": "npx pretty-quick"

I found it ran much faster on a project with a lot of files as it only parses those that git shows as being changed.

When I saw it also has a --staged flag, I decided to try putting it my lint-staged config even though underneath it still uses prettier so I was doubtful.

But it worked. I rolled back the previous failed attempts and I confirmed it worked on those too. I'm figuring it was just a version bug with prettier and/or lint-staged in how they communicate but this workaround solved the problem and now running npm run format is much quicker and not tackling everything.
