Started a new Conversation How To Index A Non-unique Column?

Hey,

I've got a table like this

INCREMENTAL_ID, ID, STRATEGY, POLICY_ID, ASSIGNED_AT, CREATED_AT, UPDATED_AT

The strategy column is a nonunique text string that I need to index to optimize a count query that's too slow at the moment, but I can't figure out how to go about this. The query I need to optimize looks like this

select count(id) as aggregate
from `external_ids`
where `strategy` = 'long_nono_unique_text_string'
and `assigned_at` is not null;

Could someone please suggest some strategies on how this is usually done? Thanks!

Replied to How To Optimize My SQL Query

@neilstee I just checked the DB tables. It seems like they are indexed, but then again, I don't really know much about it, will take a look at the suggested videos, thanks!

Replied to How To Optimize My SQL Query

@automica It's slow in production. I don't fully understand why my manager wants to optimize this tho, I ran the query against prod DB and it took about 2.5 seconds which isn't that bad and the query isn't being run very often.

Started a new Conversation How To Optimize My SQL Query

Hey,

I got this query, where I basically need to check how many IDs haven't been assigned for a certain strategy:

->where('strategy', (string) $strategy)
            ->whereNotNull('assigned_at')
            ->count();

raw SQL:

select count(*) as aggregate from `external_ids` where `strategy` = 'very long string' and `assigned_at` is not null;

And the issue is, the query seems to work pretty slow because of the count. Could someone please help me optimize this?

@tykus Thank you very much, all is working well now!

Replied to Eloquent Query Builder

Hey man, thanks, this almost fixed the issue, however, one problem is still there.

$maxName = $model->orderByDesc('name')->first(); This would return name => dddd for id => 4, but I would need id => 5. Any suggestions on how I can get that somehow?

Started a new Conversation Eloquent Query Builder

Hey,

I got this example table:

ID    NAME
1      fffff
2      aaaaa
3      bbbbb
4      ddddd
5      ddddd

And I got this function to get data from this table:

    protected function alphabeticallySortedSlice(int $limit, Iterator $collection, Closure $callback): SortedSlice
    {
        $model = new EloquentPaymentProviderModel();

        $minId = (int) $model->min('incremental_id');
        $maxId = (int) $model->max('incremental_id');

        $minName = (string) $model->min('name');
        $maxName = (string) $model->max('name');

        $minNameId = 'WHAT TO DO HERE?';
	$maxNameId = 'WHAT TO DO HERE?';

        return new SortedSlice($limit, $minId, $maxId, $minName, $maxName, $collection, $callback);
    }

And my question is - How do I retrieve first name => aaaaa and also it's id => 2 and also how do I get last value name => ddddd and it's id => 5.

Thanks!
