Commented on Find A Composer Package For Post Metadata

It simply shows how much work you have to do if you start at zero and do everything a framework can do for you by yourself.

So it's a nice approach for programming beginners to show / teach them the advantage of using a framework.

Started a new Conversation Logic In Route File / Best Practice

Laravel best practice is not putting logic into a route file.

This is pretty obvious and right.

But does this only refer to not using the SRP and to not delegating the request to properly build classes (controllers, services, fat models and so on)?

Or does this also exclude some kind of queries and loops inside your route file in order to write less code?

For example in a CMS or admin backend scenario where you have to generate a lot of similar (ressource) routes for CRUD models which names you can get from a config file or database query.

Some pseudo code for explanation:

// routes/web.php
foreach(getModelNames() as $name) {
    Route::resource(calculateRouteName($name), calculateControllerName($name));
}

So is this a good idea as route files can be cached or a bad one?

Replied to Cache Permission Issues

I got it going by myself, I think the future files were the issue:

// future files and folders
sudo setfacl -dR -m u:"$HTTPDUSER":rwX -m u:$(whoami):rwX storage
// current files and folders
sudo setfacl -R -m u:"$HTTPDUSER":rwX -m u:$(whoami):rwX storage

Started a new Conversation Cache Permission Issues

Hi everybody,

I never faced any user, group and permission issues related to my Ubuntu dev environment or any Laravel app I've worked on.

Currently I'm working on a Lumen app and implemented some APCu caching (which itself is working fine).

But I'm somehow not able to clear the application cache anymore:

php artisan cache:clear

The command says:

Failed to clear cache. Make sure you have the appropriate permissions.

I'm simply running Apache under user and group www-data and assigned my personal user username to this group www-data.

After starting a new project, I'm doing the following for the new project directory (which I got from a long and upvoted Stackoverflow post related to setting up Apache and PHP projects on Ubuntu):

sudo chown -R username /var/www/html/projectdir/
sudo chgrp -R www-data /var/www/html/projectdir/
sudo chmod -R g+w /var/www/html/projectdir/

i never faced any issue until now. Am I completely doing wrong? I've spent the last hours googling, reading and unsuccessfully trying to fix this issue. Even the evil 777 or using some setfacl instructions from Stackoverflow didn't change anything.

But when checking ls -l each new cache file is:

drwxr-sr-x

What exactly is running wrong here? Any help is appreciated :-).

Replied to Confused On Collections

You do not need to write it like this

Model::find($id)->first();

because the find method already calls the first method internally. Find always returns a model or null.

If you want to create a collection yourself, you can simply pass an array to the collection constructor / helper.

Replied to Attempt To Read Property "id" On Null .

If no one is logged in, Auth::user() will return null. So you're trying to access the id property on null.

In addition, you do not need to query the user model, as Auth::user() already returns the currently logged in user.

If you want to get the id of the currently logged in user you can simply call Auth::id().

Shouldn't the cast be like this, as Carbon uses the PHP DateTime class internally:
